HELENA, Mont. — As temperatures drop, community members will once again come together to keep their neighbors warm. On Thursday, Oct. 22, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., at Tenmile Creek Park (1505 Williams Street), volunteers will split and stack firewood for the Warm Hearts Warm Homes program.
The program provides free firewood to residents of Jefferson, Lewis and Clark, and Broadwater counties, helping fill the gap for families who rely on wood heat but may not have the means to collect, chop, or transport their own supply.
“Over the last five years we’ve been able to give away almost 100 cords of firewood to folks who aren’t able to get it themselves. Warm Hearts Warm Homes is a great way for conservation, businesses, and faith communities to come together and help provide that resource,” says organizer John Beaver, a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and board member at Prickly Pear Land Trust.
The wood bank is especially important as heating costs rise and many Montanans look for ways to stretch their resources during long winters. Last year, every single cord of wood was distributed to local households. This year, volunteers will prepare 20 cords. Anyone in need of firewood can contact the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) at 406-447-1625 to arrange pickup.
Warm Hearts Warm Homes is made possible by the support of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Prickly Pear Land Trust, Marks Lumber, Montana Conservation Corps, Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, Gardenwerks, Montana Bicycle Guild, Sunflower Bakery, and A-1 Rental.
