Northwest Passage

Northwest Passage contours along the northwest side of Mount Helena. To access the trail, park at the Tubbs Trailhead and climb the Swaney Trail for a quarter mile. Travel west  through meadows and old growth Ponderosas to the Road to Mars Trail. Northwest Passage can be combined with many westside trails for varying loops.

1906 Trail

From Mt Helena Trailhead, enjoy views of woods and meadows while gradually ascending Mt. Helena. A little over halfway to the summit, stop by the grotto for a souvenir picture. Once at the top, return on the 1906 Trail, or bravely descend the Powerline Trail. If mountain biking, please be very cautious or dismount when […]

Daisy Hill

From Clarke Street or Mount Helena Trailhead, the Daisy Hill Trail traverses the Bitterroot Way up until the Prairie Trail. Taking Daisy Hill in its entirety will have you go from a hillside meadow to a charming trail in the woods, but one of the more popular options is to take a turn on the […]

Eric Feaver Trail

A hidden gem named in honor of late labor leader and commissioner Eric Feaver, the trail is a very peaceful route to many of the Mount Helena trails, starting from the east end of Le Grande Cannon Boulevard. Take in the views of the city as you make your way up!

Quarry Trail

Quarry Trail is a rocky road that offers spectacular views without having to climb all the way to the top of Mount Helena. The easiest way to find this trail is to take it going down from the Prairie Trail. From the highest hill the trail will take you on, take a seat on the […]

Bitterroot Way

Bitterroot Way is a small maze of trails starting from Mount Helena trailhead and leading most notably to Clarke Street, Daisy Hill, and Mike Cormier Trail. Made out of a series of routes going up, down, left, or right, many parts of the Bitterroot Way offer benches to relax while catching views of the city […]

Reeder’s Alley

One of Helena’s earliest neighborhoods, Reeder’s Alley is an important historical site. Once a residence for miners, Reeder’s Alley is now home to charming commerce, and is also the last street 25K and 50K runners see during the annual Don’t Fence Me In Trail Run!

Old Chevy Trail

Popular from Charlie’s or Andy’s trails, the Old Chevy Trail is a doubletrack and former road. Though you will meet a mythic Chevrolet at the end of the hike, you actually really shouldn’t park there. To incorporate this trail into a loop, climb up Charlie’s from La Grande Cannon Boulevard, go on the Old Chevy […]

Diretissima Trail

On the west side of Mount Helena, Diretissima connects Old Chevy and Andy’s trails to Prairie and Ambrose trails. The name means “most direct route” in Italian, and this trail is true to its name, offering an efficient way to explore the area by foot or bike. A little steep but very charming, the trail […]

West End Trail

West End Trail journeys between thick pine trees and may inspire kids to dream of being lost in fairy tale woods. Usually, this rather short trail is used while attempting the Backside Loop, or as a connector between Mount Helena Ridge Trail and the summit of Mount Helena.
