LANDOWNERS, LAND TRUST, AND MILITARY TEAM UP TO CREATE NEW PUBLIC ACCESS
Located just six miles northwest of Helena, a vital piece of local history and habitat is now permanently protected. Double L Family Land partnered with Prickly Pear Land Trust and the Montana National Guard to conserve the 198-acre War Eagle Hill property. Strategically situated next to Forest Service and BLM lands, War Eagle Hill secures a key gateway to the Continental Divide while creating public hunting access through Montana’s Block Management Program.
The landscape features pristine native grasslands, vibrant riparian corridors, and old-growth forest that serve as critical winter range and movement corridors for elk, moose, pronghorn, and bears. One notable resident is an ancient Douglas-fir tree measuring nearly 60 inches in diameter. Towering over its neighbors, it started as a seedling between 300 and 600 years ago.
Funded in partnership with the U.S. Military’s Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration (REPI) program, the project prevents development encroachment near Fort Harrison while protecting local ecosystems for generations to come.
