Helena, MT— The 25th Annual Don’t Fence Me In Trail Run returns to the South Hills of Helena on Saturday, May 10, marking a quarter-century of shared miles and a collective commitment to the landscapes that shape and inspire the community. The celebration will kick off with a special anniversary event on Friday, May 9, starting at 6:00 p.m. at The Myrna Loy.
What began in 2000 as a modest effort by a handful of Prickly Pear Land Trust volunteers to showcase Helena’s emerging trail system has since grown into one of west-central Montana’s most beloved outdoor traditions, now drawing more than 1,600 participants and volunteers annually.
Anniversary Celebration at The Myrna Loy
The 25th anniversary celebration kicks off on Friday, May 9, at 6:00 p.m. at The Myrna Loy. This special evening will set the stage for an unforgettable weekend, bringing together longtime supporters, local trail enthusiasts, and the broader community. The celebration promises to be a heartfelt tribute to the race’s growth and impact.
“It’s truly wonderful to see how the race has grown—it’s an outpouring of love from our community to Prickly Pear Land Trust,” said Kris Larson, former PPLT Board Member and co-founder of Don’t Fence Me In.
The event will feature the premiere of a documentary that takes an in-depth look at the 25-year history of the Don’t Fence Me In Trail Run. In addition to the documentary screening, attendees will hear firsthand stories and reflections on trail running in Montana during a live panel discussion. The evening will also feature the presentation of special awards to key individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the race and Prickly Pear Land Trust.
World-Class Courses, Epic Energy
This year’s event promises a day of friendly competition and celebration with four new courses and a total of six events: 50K race, 25K race, 12K race and walk, and 5K race and dog walk.
“Most communities don’t have a trail system like this,” said Pam Bucy, Prickly Pear Land Trust Board President. “You can run a whole race on our trails.”
Local business owner and committee member Joe Schmechel designed the new 50K course to offer a challenging tour of the South Hills. Schmechel and race director Martin Miller teamed up to create a 25K course that explores scenic ridgelines and iconic Mount Helena. The 50K and 25K are UTMB Index Races and will draw a world-class field of trail runners.
On the 12K course, runners and walkers will wind through Mount Ascension City Park and Rodney Ridge. Half-road race, half-trail run, the 5K race is a fun adventure for all ages, while the 5K dog walk showcases furry friends of all makes and models.
All courses now begin and end in Pioneer Park. After crossing the finish line, participants will enjoy live music by local bands LARK and Copper Queen, beverages from Blackfoot River Brewing Co. and Mt. Ascension Brewing, and food provided by six food trucks.
Don’t Fence Me In is still directed by co-founder Martin Miller and remains a reflection of Helena’s deep-rooted love for its land, people, and trails. Organized by the Prickly Pear Land Trust, the event is made possible by a passionate community of hundreds of volunteers.
