The Riverman’s Last Gift

By

Richard “Bob” Brent loved Montana, Montana people, and Montana’s rivers. Born and raised in Helena, Bob served in the Navy and attended Montana State University, but he couldn’t stay away for long. He soon returned to the Helena area and spent most of his life fishing and guiding on the Missouri River. Bob was an expert guide and people person. He tied thousands of flies each winter and guided loyal customers the rest of the year.

Bob was a catch-and-release angler who advocated for healthy rivers and fish populations. Even in the last stages of his battle with Alzheimer’s disease, he enjoyed visiting the Missouri River with friends. Bob generously donated his estate to five conservation organizations, including Prickly Pear Land Trust. He wanted his legacy to conserve the place he loved so that it will be enjoyed by future generations of Montanans.

Thank you to Bob and to all the friends who shared his lifelong passion for rivers, mountains, and the camaraderie of the outdoors. If you spent time with Bob and have stories to share, please let us know. If you’d like to learn more about leaving a conservation legacy, please call, email, or stop by our office at any time.
