Mt. Ascension Natural Park

PPLT Mt Ascension

Explore the trails of Mount Ascension City Park, Helena’s South Hills destination for adventure and beauty. Hike to the summit of Mount Ascension, then head south along Entertainment Trail through high meadows with spectacular views of the surrounding trail system. Enjoy an evening stroll up Meatloaf Hill or Bompart Hill for a relaxed outing. Runners and bikers love the popular Archery Range Trail and Aftershock Trail. Thrill-seekers can tackle the downhill trails on Cruse Control and Big Dorothy. Mount Ascension City Park might not share the city’s namesake, but it packs in just as much fun as Mount Helena City Park.

History

Since 1995, Prickly Pear Land Trust has acquired and donated nearly 700 acres to the South Hills trail system. From 2006 to 2015, PPLT worked to secure public ownership of critical parcels, restoring fragmented land and preserving the Entertainment Trail. This effort, part of the Backdrop Initiative, led to the transfer of 153 acres to the City of Helena in December 2015. Mount Ascension Natural Park is vital to the South Hills trail system, supporting a wide range of outdoor recreation activities and protecting the area’s natural beauty. PPLT’s annual Don’t Fence Me In Trail Run celebrates and supports land protection and trail access in the South Hills.
