Welcome to the Prickly Pear Land Trust

Corridor of Discovery

Imagine pedaling your bike along the Missouri River and watching rainbow trout rise, pelicans resting on a gravel bar and wildflowers blooming along the bike path. You stop for lunch at an interpretive display on one of six known campsites of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery. This scene is what supporters of the Corridor of Discovery believe will attract thousands of people to ride one of the longer rail trails in the country. This project may become a reality if the Corridor of Discovery Action Committee is successful in negotiating for the acquisition of the right-of-way from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.

"This is an exciting project, but we need to make sure the project works for the property owners and businesses along the route if is to be successful," said Andy Baur, Executive Director of Prickly Pear Land Trust. "Prickly Pear Land Trust can play a vital role in keeping communications open and ensuring that landowner concerns are addressed."

The line passes through the communities of Wolf Creek, Craig, Cascade, and Ulm, over 48 bridges and through 5 tunnels. Notable features include the Missouri River, the route of Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery, Native American sites, a variety of geologic features and Tower Rock State Park.

The Corridor of Discovery Trail has the potential to be one the nation's finest recreational corridors. While it may take several years, the action committee is committed to working with supporters, landowners and communities along the route to ensure that this trail's benefits far outweigh its potential challenges. We'll keep you informed as the project moves forward so hang on and enjoy the ride!
