Organization History
The concept for the Prickly Pear Land Trust was developed by a group of Helena residents who noted that access to many of their traditional recreation areas and many of the natural areas around their city were being altered. Founders were reacting to proposed development of the South Hills and the associated loss of lands for public use. Rather than merely fighting this development, they saw an opportunity to purchase the private land and preserve it for wildlife and recreation. They also saw opportunities to coordinate efforts to improve low-impact recreation, facilitate conservation easements on private land and provide balance in discussions of land use and management.
Never doubt that a small group of committed individuals can change the world. Indeed that is the only thing that ever has. —Margaret Mead
